How to start In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow quest
The side quest In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow was added with Update v4.0, also known as the Free Next-Gen Update to The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. The quest is accessible to all players, according to the official patch notes. If you can’t get it on a
To start the In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow quest you have to go to the Devil’s Pit in Velen. This is southeast of Hanged Man’s Tree. Near the entrance to the area you will find an NPC.
This NPC is a priest of the Eternal Fire. The Devil’s Pit is a mine where people with incurable and contagious diseases were sent. Some bandits killed all the infected ones and took over the place.
But that’s not the biggest danger; locked inside the mine lies a creature that could wreak havoc if it comes out.
The Priest warned the bandits but they tried to kill him, now it’s your turn to save the day. Clear the path to the mine’s entrance.
There are a number of places in the mine where you can use Keira’s Magic Lamp. If you have not completed the side quests starting with “Magic Lamp”, you will not be able to use it. I strongly recommend you to go do it. It’s a very early game quest, recommended level is 6. It starts as a follow-up to the main quest Wandering in the Dark, where you chase the Wild Hunt and fight Nithral at the end.
Exploring the Devil’s Pit mine
Once you’ve dealt with the deserters enter the mine. Explore the first area, and take the small stairs. You’ll find a letter from another Witcher named Reinald.
Come downstairs and continue walking until you see two large wooden doors, grab the note and open them.
After a few seconds, you’ll encounter the first choice of the mission.
There are two paths, if you want to complete the optional objective take the left one (1). A voice will tell you to go the other way (2), ignore it.
Few steps ahead, there’s a chest on a small cliff. It contains the following: Resin, Dark Iron Ore, Phosphorus, Meteorite Ore, Manuscript page: Superior Vampire Oil, and an Eirlithrad sword. Nothing too important but gathering as many materials as possible is a must in The Witcher 3.
Return to the main path, and walk a few steps while using your Witcher Senses. Read the note and use Aard on the wall.
Then you’ll find something or someone – the first Infected. It won’t attack you, get close to it and press your interact button.
Keep following the path, use your Witcher Senses, and loot everything. Pro tip: Looting everything could be a nice and easy way to recognize that you are exploring new parts of the mine in case you get lost in the tunnels.
Eventually, you’ll get to this section of the cave. There’s just one way to follow. Explore the place, and then continue. This part is very straightforward. Remember to use your Witcher Senses!
When you get to this place, get close to the desk and read the note. You’ll learn some of the horrors that happened in this place.
Take the exit of this room, and turn left. You’ll see a destroyed bridge, jump to the other side of it and continue until you find the next letter from Reinald.
Return and you’ll see a ramp, that’s where you’re headed. Jump into the new area, a small cutscene will trigger.
Remember the Plague Victim that you found a few minutes ago? Well, now it’s four of them, and this time they’re going to attack you. They move and attack like humans but are more resistant, it is fairly easy to defeat them.
Once you’ve defeated them, climb here and use your Witcher Senses. You’ll find a note from one of the Eternal Fire members responsible for what happened in this mine. If you leave before searching this place you won’t be able to return.
You can continue now. Jump to the other side of this bridge.
There’s a door, break it with Aard and interact with what you see at the table, and another cutscene will begin.
Now it’s time to prepare for what you’re about to face. Open the bestiary and read about the Red Miasmal, then prepare Reinald’s Philter potion. It is a Quest Item so you can’t equip it.
The minimap will guide you, follow it, and don’t deviate. The next obstacle will be a room with more Infected.
These are the last enemies before reaching two giant doors, inside of them lies the boss, be prepared.
Get close to the trapped man and destroy the stalagmites with Aard. After this, a conversation will begin.
Red Miasmal Boss Fight
This man is Reinald, or at least his body. He’ll try to convince you to give him the potion that you made, you can agree with his request or refuse and drink it yourself.
There’s the possibility of testing if he’s saying the truth or not but in the end, it all comes to two choices – give him the potion or use it yourself.
As most of you would’ve expected, he’s being controlled by the Miasmal. You’re going to fight him regardless of what you pick, but if you give him the potion his strength will increase.
If you choose not to, the true Reinald will take over for a few seconds and ask you to drink the potion and kill him before it’s too late. The fight will begin.
He looks like a human and attacks like one, but do not underestimate him. He’s a Witcher, after all, his hits are faster and stronger. Reinald can also cast both Igni and Quen.
Once you’ve defeated Reinald, the Red Miasmal will appear in its true form.
The mechanics of this fight are simple but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be super easy. The Miasmal has a ranged attack that is slow but powerful, it looks like something that’s moving under the ground.
The speed of this attack isn’t anything impressive but you might be caught off guard by how far it can reach. Roll away from it even if you think that it’s “too far”.
The Red Miasmal can’t run so to close the distance it’s going to appear (teleport) next to you and strike you with its hands.
You can use Quen, dodge, or roll away to avoid getting hit by it. A couple of hits and you’ll be in lethal damage. Do not underestimate it.
It can also summon Infected to help it in battle. Run away from the Miasmal and fight them, if you can’t kill them on time the Miasmal will follow you and you’ll have to fight them all at once.
If an Infected add is on the path of the Fire attack from the Miasmal, it will catch fire and explode.
If this happens, run into a spot that is far from it. The Infected can run at the speed of a human so they’ll catch up to you really fast, this is your chance to kill them.
Post-fight cinematic and choices regarding Reinald
After defeating the Red Miasmal a conversation with the spirit of Reinald begins. It turns out that he was hired by a priest of the Eternal Fire to expel the Miasmal but when it appeared that he was possessed the priests panicked and seal the place.
This happened three hundred years ago, hence why the armor and medallion that he carries are so different from Geralt’s.
Despite being free, the spirit of the old Witcher has yet to find peace. Here’s where your choice will affect the outcome of the story, there are three endings (that I know of). He’ll ask you to see bring the priest:
What happens if you Refuse
If you refuse then you’ll burn his body, denying him the possibility to find peace. The priest will never truly know what happened here.
What happens if you bring the Priest
Bring the priest so that he learns of the horrors caused by the Eternal Fire. Reinald will blame him for everything.
What happens if you side with Reinald
If you agree with Reinald he’ll end up attacking and killing the young priest.
What happens if you side with the Priest
If you defend the cleric Geralt will make Reinald see reason. The priest won’t continue to follow the Church of the Eternal Fire and in its place, he’ll stay here to make this a place for the afflicted.
After this cinematic, you will complete the quest In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow. The Scavenger Hunt: Forgotten Wold School Gear Diagrams will start up next automatically.
Where to find the Forgotten Wolf School Gear Diagrams
Finishing this quest grants you the ability to craft the Forgotten Wolven Steel sword. You might be done with this part but you still need to find the diagrams of the armor.
Quick Travel to Kaer Morhen and enter the keep.
Go to the left side of the main hall, climb the stairs and turn left. There you’ll find the diagrams.
How to get the Forgotten Wolf School Gear gear set
Congratulations! You can now craft the Forgotten Wolven Swords and Armor set (if you’re already level 20). To be able to use the upgraded swords (Mastercraft) you must be level 34.
The Grandmaster set is available from the crafter in Toussaint. You can access it only if you own the Blood and Wine expansion. The Grandmaster tier is for level 40 or higher and has a different appearance. It is inspired the armor Henry Cavill wore in the second season of The Witcher TV Show on Netflix.
These are the armor and swords that CD PROJEKT RED modeled after what Henry Cavill was using in the Netflix TV Show The Witcher.
Forgotten Wolven Gear Set Crafting Materials Requirements
These are the crafting materials required for the normal version of the gear set. You will need to craft it first, because to upgrade it to Mastercrafted, you will need the normal version of each gear piece. If you want to craft the Grandmaster tier, you need the Mastercrafted.
After you have obtained the diagrams, you will be able to craft the normal version, Mastercrafted tier of the witcher gear set and if you own Blooad and Wine, the Grandmaster tier as well. Here are the requirements to craft the Mastercrafted tier:
The ingredients are nothing special. You can purchase whatever you are missing from the Armorer and Blacksmith when you visit them to craft your armor and swords.
The Grandmaster tier is very expensive and requires high quality and rare crafting materials. By the time you are so high level (30 or higher) to reach Toussaint and unlock the Grandmaster Crafting Tier, you should have enough money to craft it and probably enough materials as well.
Where to find an Armorer and a Blacksmith
Unlike Reinald, Geralt is not capable of crafting his own armor so you need to find a Blacksmith and an Armorer.
For the Blacksmith, I went to Novigrad. Remember that even some NPCs have to sleep so if he’s not there you just have to meditate until the sun comes out.
There are fewer Armorers than Blacksmiths but you can easily find one in Velen. Travel to Crow’s Perch or Castle Village, then look for Fergus Graem.
You are now a proud owner of the Forgotten Wolven Armor set, Steel Sword and Silver Sword!
For the Grandmaster tier, you need the merchant Lafargue in Toussaint. This is the same NPC that will give you all of the Grandmaster Witcher Sets quests.
Overview of the Forgotten Wolven Witcher Set
This is how Geralt looks with the Forgotten Wolven armor set and swords. The visuals are identical for the Normal and Mastercrafted sets.
The Grandmaster version of this witcher set is inspired by the armor Henry Cavill wears as Geralt in the second season of the Netflix TV Show.
